Plastrac AUTO DISC Flood Fed Plastic Blending System
ON THE THROAT MATERIAL BLENDING FOR PLASTIC INJECTION
Auto-Disc uniquely provides fully synchronized blending with gravimetric calibration of virgin resin, color masterbatch, regrind, and other additives. Synchronous feeding and blending eliminates sequential batching and the need for mechanical mixing. As a result, the risk of particle segregation that is attributed to agitation is eliminated.
The flood fed model does not require a metering unit for the virgin resin. In this configuration, the virgin resin flows by gravity in the same manner as it does in the hopper of an injection molding machine. However, in the Auto-Disc blending hopper, the virgin resin flows under a baffle, spreading the additives and colorants evenly over an extended area of virgin resin pellets as they enter the feed throat of the injection unit. The metering rate of each additive is synchronized with the injection screw recovery time. This procedure ensures an even distribution of color concentrate or other additive throughout the volume of material for each shot.
Since a feeding unit is not used for the virgin resin, the total weight of the shot being injected is entered into the microprocessor control. The percent (%) of each additive being metered is also entered along with the approximate screw recovery time. The actual screw recovery time is measured by the controller during each recovery stroke. With this information, the Auto-Disc blender automatically meters each additive and distributes it over the entire shot. Each metering unit on the blender has its own Gravi-Cal Automatic Gravimetric Calibration System which includes a rugged electronic weight sensor for reliable weight accuracy. After the new calibration factor is automatically computed and entered into memory, sampled material is deposited in the sample collection hopper. The sampled material may be returned periodically to the main hopper manually or via a hopper loader via the bin s return port. Sampling for calibration takes place during the time the screw is not rotating. The operator can select the frequency of sampling.
Blenders which are metering both color concentrate and regrind automatically compensate for the amount of color required based on the level of regrind and virgin. If the regrind unit is turned off, the amount of color being delivered to the process is increased to provide the target percent based on the use of virgin resin only.
