The SEMICONDUCTOR EQUIPMENT CORPORATION 4460 Multi-nozzle Hot Gas Rework Station incorporates a reflow head that has four hot gas nozzles and a vacuum pick-up tool. The machine is computer controlled and has a vision system for precise and accurate alignment. Each nozzle can sweep along an edge of a Surface Mount device to reflow the solder for removal or replacement. One, two, or four nozzles can be called upon, depending on the device type. The nozzles are quartz with a serpentine wire heater element. Each adjustable nozzle has a thermal couple installed through the quartz. Each nozzle has a sweep motor, a sweep slide, a lead screw, and a home position sensor. The sweep motor then rotates the lead screw which drives the slide mechanism back and forth. In addition, each nozzle has a position motor, lead screw and home position sensor. The position movement positions the nozzle the correct distance from the package. The vacuum tip is mounted on a slide and its height above the board can be varied. The head assembly where the nozzles are located is driven up and down by a stepping motor and lead screw.
