Nw coast style wood carving elbow adze haft / handle sm
This is a roughed out haft, or handle for a traditional NW Coast style wood workers, or carvers elbow adze. It is a Davis Brothers small size haft, Made of Cherry wood with an inlaid gusset of red oak in the head end to prevent splitting. Final blade bed cutting, drilling of any fastening holes, notching for twine binding , and final rounding, sanding and smoothing remains for you to do. When fitted with a proper blade, and finished, it will make a lasting high performance tool. This adze haft is based on designs used by native Northwest carvers for hundreds of years. Using mauls, adzes, and crooked knives they produced both monumental sculptures and finely detailed household items.
My brother and I are woodcarving artists, and long ago learned to forge and make our own tools. We have made tools and knives for friends, family, and acquaintances for years and are now offering them here. This adze handle weighs 7 ounces, and is 14 3/4" long. The blade shank bed is 1 1/16" wide, and designed for a shank length of 4" or less. The angle between the center of the hand on the grip, and the plane of the unfinished blade bed is 60 degrees. There is enough thickness to the head as supplied to allow a few degrees of adjustment when cutting out the bed to fit a blade. In general this particular adze handle is used for smaller gutter or finishing adzes meant to be worked closer to the body, even on work held in the lap.
