This breed is the ultimate dual purpose breed!
These are very meaty birds but they are also on the showy side. All my birds exhibits such large breasts that their chest feathers part and push to the side. I've read in many sources that Dark Cornish are "fair" to "poor" layers, but my hens not only started laying early, but have continued to lay during the winter months, and with the increasing daylight they are back in full swing!
They do have a tendency to be broody and are excellent mothers.They are very hardy birds and eat almost no feed during warmer months. if allowed to forage for themselves. My flock is allowed to range all over my property and their diet is supplemented by a homemixed recipe of grains, Calf-Mana, crushed eggshell, flaxseed, kelp and any pancakes and biscuits that are leftover in the morning!
All eggs are collected twice daily and they are never washed, protecting their viabilty and freshness. Their fertility rate has been verified at 98% (!!), with a hatching rate of 90% with a broody hen and around 80% in my incubator.
