1018 is a general purpose low carbon steel with good case hardening qualities. It has a higher manganese content than certain other low carbon grades, which makes it better for carburized parts and it produces a harder and more uniform case. 1018 Alloy is often used in high volume screw machine parts applications and is especially suitable for parts requiring high surface hardness with a relatively soft core. It is commonly used in shafts, spindles, pins, rods, sprocket assemblies, gears and pinions, ratchets, chain pins, studs, anchor pins, special bolts, tie rods, machinery parts, and an incredibly wide variety of component parts.
