SOME FURTHER INFORMATION. Our Supplier is weighing out the emery specially for us at Hale & Co. in our preferred system of weights, the Imperial, otherwise known as the Old Standard English system of weights. The Imperial ton is oddly close to the metric tonne, which is nothing but a fake Imperial ton. The Imperial ton consists of 2,240 lbs. avoirdupois, 240 more pounds than the American "short ton" of 2,000 lbs. Thus, a quarter-ton here means 560 lbs., not 500 lbs., and
THIS MEANS THAT YOU ARE GETTING YOUR EMERY
FOR LESS THAN $1.25 A POUND!!!
EVEN IF YOU are thinking of smaller quantities, you can always sell off your surplus.
YOUR ORDER will come in TEN half-cwt. (=half-hundredweight = 56 lbs.) BAGS, each one of which may be of any grade that you wish.
THE GRADES are determined by Standard U. S. Mesh, which is fairly much the same as Imperial Standard Mesh. Choose yours:-
60. QUILTERS! This is your Grade, although some prefer 220 Mesh (below).
80. KNIFE SHARPENERS and TOOL GRINDERS! This is your Grade.
120. VALVE GRINDERS! This is your Grade.
220. QUILTERS! This is your Grade, although some prefer 60 Mesh (above).
Other Grades, such as 300, 320, and 330, for OPTICAL and LENS GRINDING, are available by Special Order in Quantity.
LARGER QUANTITIES. We are capable of supplying any quantity from 1/2 Imperial Ton (= 1,120 lbs.) to Two Dozen 20' Containers of 16 Imperial Tons each (=24 x 16 x 2,240 = 860,160 lbs.) on one order at short notice. Larger quantities available by contract. All at most favourable prices which become ever more attractive with increase in quantity.
This is the best emery available in the world, which we import from Turkey. It is the best emery to use for the following purposes:-
1. PINCUSHIONS. Unlike the other, cheaper emeries offered by competitors, our emery contains almost no hydrophilic impurities, meaning that your needles and pins will be less likely to rust. This emery is also very dense. The price is a little higher, but your needles and pins will remain sharp, rustless, and usable for far longer. One pound should fill four tomatoes and four cherries.
2. POLISHING METAL AND GEMS. Emery has a hardness of 9, which means that it will polish any natural substance except the diamond. Excellent for isotypes of corundum, such as rubies and emeralds, as well as beryls, topazzes, and the like, and for steel and harder metal. Perhaps overkill for even the harder alloys of gold, silver, &c., save that certain brasses and bronzes respond very well. If you know your art, you will know what you are doing. If you don't, please ask, and we shall find out together. Flour of Emery may be put on wheels and sticks. Take care of this flour of emery by saving it and it will last a long time in many operations. NOTE. This grade is too coarse for most glass and optical work, for which we have other grades available.
You may also make pastes of emery for buff and other grinding wheels.
3. STROPS (STRAPS), STROP PASTE, and KEEN SHARPENING. Even with a Translucent Arkansas (See our Other Listings) hone, a final stropping is still necessary to impart the keenest edge to leather knives and other sharp tools, razors, and such things as kitchen knives. So, a strop is necessary. Strop paste is applied to the strop. Strop paste is made from this grade of Flour of Emery: ask us how to make it.
4. GRINDING AND POLISHING. Valves, Valve Seats, Lenses, Metals, Glass, Sculpture, Castings, &c. With a Hardness of 9, Emery will grind any natural material but diamonds and most manmade materials.
5. PAINT FOR STAIR TREADS. The most common use for immense quantities of emery, which is mixed into the paint to prevent slippage.
6. CHROME AND OTHER PLATING. Many grades up to 300 Mesh are used by platers, especially chrome platers. You should know what you need.
7. LENS GRINDING. Optical Emery is the finest mesh ground, and we have all kinds available by special order. We are also going to be importing the best pine pitch (See our Other Listings) for lens grinding and other purposes.
NOTICE. - If you want to find out more of the many uses of Emery, please see our Other Listings, where you will find Holtzapfel's classic works on Turning and Mechnical Manipulation. Volume I. (available separately, although we recommend all three volumes) contains exhhaustive information on abrasives, grinding, polishing, and sharpening. Well worth the study and very well written.
EMERY IS COMPLETELY NATURAL AND ENVIRONMENTALLY INERT.
WEAR RESPIRATORS IF USING LARGE QUANTITIES AT ONE TIME.
M. S. D. S. SHEETS AVAILABLE AT PURCHASE.
CONSULT GOVERNMENTAL SAFETY REGULATIONS.
HAVING SAID THAT, EMERY IS NOT DANGEROUS
IF YOU USE SIMPLE COMMON SENSE.

We carry as much in the way of the best hand woodworking tools as are currently made, including all saws by Pax, &c., Joseph Marples's Joiner's (Measuring) tools, and much else. Please enquire.
So, our new policy is as follows. Anything going to anybody in the United States will come direct from us in California, even if we have to back-order it. Anything made in England going elsewhere will normally be sent direct from England, but there may be exceptions. Articles made in the U. S. A. will be sent direct from us in California to any destination unless we have arranged for direct delivery from the manufacturer.
We try to combine items wherever possible but this may not always be possible. Combining items will save you a ton of money in costs of delivery.
Indeed, we recommend that you first think through everything that you need and then place the order for everything at the same time. This will cut your costs dramatically.
RUSH DELIVERY will cost you a fortune and it will take at least one working day to organise. If we have to arrange the order overseas, it may take a day longer because of different time zones and the transfer of funds. So, please PLAN your RUSH ORDER in advance.
We are always available to talk with you and you have our telephone number. Unless we are ill, which happens, we act very quickly, but please work with us.
