The Japanese quail has an alias of many names. The most common is the Japanese Quail or the Coturnix Quail.
Japanese quail have been widely distributed throughout Asia and Europe in the wild. They are a migratory bird, dwelling on the ground. Egyptians used to capture them and keep them as pets at the beginning of the 11th century because of their "singing" capability. By the 1900s, the small birds became popular in Japan for their meat and eggs as they mature very fast and are prolific egg layers.
In the U.S. Japanese Quail are used in research, as well as for meat and eggs. The birds are also being bred by fanciers, including myself, to create new mutations and colors but those birds are meant to be pets or egg producers.
