5356 is the most commonly used aluminum filler alloy because of its good strength and its good feeding tendencies as MIG wire. Hold a piece of 5356 and 4043 next to each other, 5356 is stiffer. Its designed to weld 5,000 series structural alloys and 6,000 series extrusions (essentially, anything but castings because of castings high silicon content). It isn't suitable for service temperatures exceeding 150 degrees F (corrode at higher temps). For components that are to be anodized after welding, 5356 is recommended over 4043, which turns black when anodized. (kudo's to Lincoln Electric for this blurb).
